What is the award?
Alberta Milk, and our partners from Breakfast for Learning Alberta, Dietitians
of Canada and Ever Active Schools, is happy to announce that up to seven awards
of $1,000 each will be given to schools (Kindergarten to Grade
12) in recognition of their creative nutrition initiatives. Initiatives can
include improving food available at school, implementing nutrition guidelines
or policies and/or promoting nutrition education. Winning schools will also
receive a certificate for their achievements and will have their school name
published on the Alberta Milk website.
Why is this award being offered? A healthy nutrition environment at school can help to improve students’ eating
habits, behaviour and overall wellbeing. From the Canadian Community Health
Survey we know that:
- 22% of Alberta children and youth (ages 2-17) were overweight or obese
- Over half of children and youth ages 4-18 did not meet their recommended
minimum servings of vegetables and fruit
- Over one-third of children ages 4-9 did not meet the recommended minimum
of 2 servings of milk products
- By ages 10-16, 61% of boys and 83% of girls did not meet the recommended
minimum of 3 servings of milk products
Since children spend over half of their non-sleep time at school, it is
a great place to positively impact their health.
